Easter Egg Hunters In For A Chilly Weekend

The Easter holiday weekend is likely to be mostly overcast and cool across much of the country, according to weather forcasters.

Temperatures in most parts are likely to be around or below average with the mercury expected to approach zero in some parts of the country at night.

Only a few parts of the UK are likely to see anything like extended periods of sunshine but most parts are forecast to see some wet weather.

Weather forecasters have largely dampened predictions of tornadoes and a sustained washout for the holiday period.

Sky News weather producer Christopher England said: "It's very early to say at this stage, but it's looking like it's going to be fairly settled.

"Friday will probably start wet but after that it's looking like high pressure will come to dominate for most of the weekend which is what will lead to the more settled conditions.

"It's looking like it is going to be mainly dry but probably fairly cloudy for most parts. Temperatures may be around or a little above average but the South East may be cooler.

"We can't entirely rule out reports that there are going to be tornadoes and a washout but at this stage it's looking very unlikely."

The best weather is likely to be seen in the West and South West, where in Cornwall the clouds may be thinner and there could be sun on some days.

In London and the South there is also a possibility of some sunshine but Good Friday may be blighted by showers.

The average daytime high in London for the whole of April is 15C (58F), according to holiday-weather.com.

The Midlands is forecast to experience similar weather to the South with temperatures around its average daytime high.

Northern England could be colder with the possibility that daytime temperatures could get down below those in the South even if the sun occasionally pokes through the cloud.

There could be touches of frost in the North overnight.

North Wales and the North West are also likely to be occasionally wet, with rain possible in some parts every day of the holiday weekend.

The Scottish Highlands are predicted to experience the lowest temperatures in the UK with the possibility that the thermometer could drop below freezing at night on high ground, despite a mix of cloud, sunny periods and occasional showers during the day.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for ice across the top half of Britain and has said there is "potential for hazardous driving conditions".

Lowland Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to see temperatures closest to their daytime seasonal averages. The average daytime high for Belfast in April is 11C (52F).
