The easy trend from the men's AW19 fashion shows you can start wearing now

The first weekend of January kicked off with London Fashion Week Men’s, a smorgasboard of runway shows that gave an insight into the menswear trends that are set to dominate come winter 2019.

While aesthetically exciting, some of the trends can be tricky to imagine yourself actually wearing.

The move towards genderless fashion, and the resulting pencil skirts and pops of red lipstick that popped up on this season’s menswear catwalks, might, for example, seem a bit out there for some. That's perfectly reasonable.

Pleasingly though, the AW19 shows also unearthed a distinctly wearable trend. And it's one you can start wearing right away.

I choose comfort over style every time. So when I started to see one big coat, two big coats and then a long line of supersized coats walking towards me down the runway, my eyes lit up. And it's not just oversized coats, it’s huge scarves too. Flowing, almost-touching-the-floor length scarves, which you can wrap, tie and drape to your heart's content. Rejoice! Clothes that keep you warm are trending. Cosy, my friends, is in.

All you need to decide is how you want to style this trend. You could go classic like Kent & Curwen (a brand part-owned by David Beckham) with its elegant double breasted coat or perhaps slightly more tailored and modern, using Daniel W. Fletcher as a reference. If following the curve of athleisure entertains you then Qasimi’s big wool coats worked well on the runway paired with technical fabrics and tracksuits.

E.Tautz even made the case for ankle-length, belted coats. Shorter guys navigating this style should belt the coat to ensure it retains shape and doesn’t swamp.

I’m personally looking forward to getting my hands on a long scarf that wraps around with length to spare. Sunnei, A-Cold-Wall* and Lou Dalton all offered such generous scarf situations, with Bobby Abley going one step further and offering an allocated scarf for your head. Picture a balaclava sewn onto a scarf, if you will. I’m all for warmth, but I can’t see this one catching on.

Some trends take a while to migrate from catwalk to sidewalk, but trends this wonderfully practical may require less convincing. I mean, who wouldn’t want a big coat and scarf to match as they head out of the door in the morning?

So, as the temperatures dip even further, you may want to invest in an oversized coat and scarf combo. And if you and your colleagues are not yet having a debate over whose coat is the longest or how many times you can wrap your scarf around your neck, don’t worry, you have until AW19 to catch up.

Or should I say, wrap up.
