EasyJet has revealed plans to expand its operations at Birmingham Airport less than a year after its base opened. The budget airline opened its base at BHX in March 2024 and has since more than doubled its network.

A total of 23 new routes have been launched in the last eight months and more than twice the number of passengers flew with EasyJet this financial year, with package holidays to Majorca and city breaks to Amsterdam proving the most popular.

Now, the carrier has announced it will base two more aircraft at its Birmingham HQ, supporting around 800 jobs and helping to deliver new routes. The two extra Airbus A320s will arrive in Brum next summer.

The move comes after EasyJet announced two new routes starting in 2025 to holiday island destinations Gran Canaria and Malta. The twice-weekly routes will take off from May 2 to Gran Canara and from June 3 to Malta.

Bosses say the expansion will support the local economy with a £27 million investment boost and each aircraft supporting around 400 direct and indirect jobs. Ali Gayward, EasyJet's UK country manager, said: "Our continued success in Birmingham is a clear testament to the continued popularity of our flights and holidays, with customers choosing us for our trusted brand, unrivalled network and great value fares.

"The growth of our fleet with two additional aircraft will not only support around 800 jobs but is enabling us to further unlock the opportunity of the continuing demand that we see for both leisure and business travel in the Midlands. We’re already capturing this opportunity with the launch of new routes next summer, which will provide more customers with greater choice and connectivity, and we look forward to welcoming them on board."

Tom Screen, aviation director of Birmingham Airport, said: "EasyJet started its base from Birmingham Airport in March this year and since then its expansion of routes has been phenomenal. Offering city breaks, domestic short hops, sunshine holidays and even flights to see Santa in Lapland the airline caters for our customer’s holiday and business travel needs.

"The announcement of these two additional aircraft from summer 2025 ensures that even more routes and frequencies will be added direct from Birmingham Airport offering customers convenient and competitive flights and holidays.”

EasyJet launched flights for the first time from Birmingham in December 2007, heading to Geneva, and operated its largest ever flying programme at the airport this year, flying over 1.6 million passengers to and from the city. New routes to take off since the base opened in March include Marrakech, Reykjavik, Hurghada, Prague, Krakow, Rovaniemi and Innsbruck.
