EasyJet's little-known rule that lets passengers bring extra hand luggage for free
Holidaymakers booking their 2025 getaways are being urged to familiarise themselves with current hand luggage rules following a couple of key changes at airports across the UK and the EU last year.
Hand luggage rules changed in the UK in June 2024 when the 100ml rule for carrying liquids in carry-on bags was reintroduced. The EU reinstated the same restrictions in September.
Airlines including Ryanair, EasyJet, Jet2 and TUI all have their own baggage rules that passengers must follow to avoid unexpected charges when they get to the airport gate. EasyJet's allow travellers to bring one small under-seat cabin bag per person, which must measure no more than 45 x 36 x 20cm including wheels and handles.

The strict allowance can be difficult to stick to if you're packing for more than a couple of days away, though passengers can pay extra to upgrade to a large cabin bag measuring up to 56 x 45 x 25cm.
EasyJet also has a lesser-known rule that permits passengers to bring five items with them free of charge in addition to their basic luggage allowance. This includes a coat and one bag of goods purchased at the airport.
The rule titled 'handheld belongings' reads: "You're allowed to bring some extra things into the cabin eg umbrella, overcoat, crutches, walking stick, one standard bag of goods bought at the airport."
All other items must be stored inside passengers' bag. EasyJet is known to measure suitcases before boarding and anyone found to be breaking the rules can be charged a £48 airport bag fee. The oversized bag will then need to be checked into the aircraft hold.
