We always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day – and the trope may ring true if your goal is burning calories.

A new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, tested 16 men who were first made to consume a high-calories breakfast and a low calorie dinner for three days.

After, the participants swapped, and spent three days eating a light breakfast and loading up on the calories come dinner time.

Researchers at Lübeck University in Germany who conducted the study, found that when the subjects indulged in a hearty breakfast, they burnt twice as many calories throughout the day than when they ate a large dinner.

Scientists found a calorific breakfast sped up metabolism, proving that dietary induced thermogenesis (DIT) – the process whereby the body produces heat – is somehow stronger in the morning.

Corresponding author Dr Juliane Richter said: "Our results show a meal eaten for breakfast - regardless of the amount of calories it contains - creates twice as high diet-induced thermogenesis as the same meal consumed for dinner.

"This finding is significant for all people as it underlines the value of eating enough at breakfast."

She added: "We recommend that patients with obesity as well as healthy people eat a large breakfast rather than a large dinner to reduce body weight and prevent metabolic diseases."

We'll take this as our cue to load up on the extra pancakes.
