Ed Sheeran has said his baby daughter cries when he sings his songs to her.

The musician confirmed he and wife Cherry Seaborn had welcomed their first child together back in September 2020, revealing they had named her Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

Ahead of performing at Radio 1’s Big Weekend of Live Music on Saturday, the 30-year-old told Radio 1 DJ Jordan North: “I definitely spent hours and hours in front of the mirror pretending to be essentially what I am now. Practice makes perfect innit.

"Now I’ll sing [new songs] to my daughter, who’s not my biggest fan. She just cries.

“No, I’ve got some she likes. She really likes Shape Of You, the marimba sound is good but she doesn’t like anything loud or anything belty.”

The comment came as he took part in Kids Ask Difficult Questions, a segment in which children ask celebrities questions.

The Thinking Out Loud hitmaker has tended to keep his personal life out of the spotlight, rarely passing comment on his family.

Back in 2019, he confirmed he and Seaborn had tied the knot in a private ceremony after months of speculation. It had previously been reported they'd said 'I do' in December 2018 at their Suffolk home.

Sheeran announced his daughter's birth on Instagram after an eight month-long hiatus from the photo sharing platform.

He posted a snap of a tiny pair of socks set on a blanket, writing: "Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you... Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter - Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran. We are completely in love with her.

"Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x."

Radio 1's Big Weekend of Live Music will see new performances from the likes of Celeste, Anne-Marie and AJ Tracey as well as memorable ones for previous years' events.

Sheeran performs for Radio 1’s Big Weekend at 2pm on Saturday on BBC Radio 1.
