Ed Sheeran breached royal protocol when he did THIS while being awarded his MBE

Ed Sheeran may have let the excitement go to his head while collecting his MBE, as he manged to break the rules by breaching royal protocol.

Despite being on his best behaviour, and even covering up his extensive tattoo collection, the Shape of You hitmaker raised a few eyebrows while receiving his honour from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

That’s because Ed touched the future King on the arm!

While this wasn’t a fatal error, royal etiquette dictates that ideally you shouldn’t touch a royal beyond a formal handshake.

‘There is no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting The Queen or a member of the royal family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms,’ the royal website states.

‘For men this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer to simply shake hands in the usual way.’

But if Prince Charles was bothered, he politely didn’t let on as he made Ed a Member of the Order of the British Empire at the Investiture Ceremony yesterday afternoon.

The Galway Girl singer was bestowed the MBE honour for his services to music and charity, after it was announced he was the highest streamed Spotify artist this year.

While picking up his honour, Ed also made it clear that he was free for the upcoming royal wedding, should Prince Harry and Meghan Markle be in need of a performer at their May nuptials at Windsor Palace.

That would be one wedding singer we’d love to see!
