Ed Sheeran has taken to Instagram to tell everyone the REAL reason he's quit Twitter and it's apparently nothing to do with his Game of Thrones cameo.

Yesterday (July 18) he appeared to have quit the social network, only for his page to be reactivated with all but three tweets deleted. Many fans thought it was due to people being a bit mean about his Thrones role.

However, he's revealed he was planning on quitting Twitter anyway and he really doesn't care, because he was IN Game of Thrones and that's "f**kin' awesome".

"Last i'll say on this. I came off Twitter Coz I was always intending to come off Twitter, had nothing to do with what people said about my game of thrones cameo, because I am in game of thrones, why the hell would I worry what people thought about that.

"It's clearly f**kin' awesome. Timing was just a coincidence, but believe what you want.

So there you go.

Anyway, Game of Thrones director Jeremy Podeswa has since stood up for poor Ed against the trolls and said he did a good job.

"I think Ed did a lovely job - he's a lovely actor and a lovely person," Podeswa insisted in an interview with Newsweek.

The director argued that there's been such a strong negative reaction simply because Ed is well-known, adding: "If people didn't know who Ed was, they wouldn't have thought about it twice.

"The hoo-ha seems to be from things that are outside of the world of the show. In the world of the show he did a lovely job, and he looks like he belongs in that world."

Luckily for Ed, he'll get another shot at TV acting when he lends his voice to a parody of La La Land on an upcoming instalment of The Simpsons.
