Ed Sheeran recreates Love Actually scene ahead of Christmas song release

Ed Sheeran and Elton John recreated Love Actually’s iconic doorstep scene to officially announce their new Christmas song.

The singers collaborated on the festive single titled Merry Christmas which will be released on Friday.

In a clip posted to Ed’s Instagram page, the 30-year-old musician knocks on Elton’s door and motions for him to be quiet.

He then holds up a series of message cards like the famous clip starring Andrew Lincoln and Kiera Knightley.

“Hello. Last Christmas I received a call from my mate Elton John,” it reads as Ed gestures towards Elton.

“He told me we should do a Christmas song and I replied ‘yea maybe in 2022.’

“But I actually wrote the chorus that day and here we are, our Christmas song. Merry Christmas is out this Friday.”

Elton, 74, also shared the clip with his one million Twitter fans announcing the new track.

“Just under a year ago, I called Ed Sheeran to see if he wanted to make a Christmas single with me and now it’s nearly here,” he wrote.

“‘Merry Christmas’ will be out Friday December 3 with all proceeds from this year’s Christmas period going to the Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation and [Elton John Aids Foundation].”

Ed previously let slip the news of their Christmas duo in October, despite Elton hoping to keep it a secret until its release.

“Yeah, he let the cat out of the bag, didn’t he?” Elton told NME when asked about the mishap.

Both artists have celebrated number one albums this year, including Ed’s fourth album = (Equals) and Elton’s Lockdown Sessions.

The pair are now taking on three-time Christmas chart topper LadBaby who has finished in first place for the past three consecutive years.

Elton added: “We’ve got the sausage roll man to deal with, haven’t we? We’ve got LadBaby to deal with.”
