Liverpool are reportedly interested in Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

Italian news outlet Tuttosport have credited the Reds as one of the clubs interested in the 24-year-old after an impressive season in Bergamo. Arne Slot's side have reportedly outlined the midfielder as a target in the upcoming summer transfer window, which opens on June 14.

In their report, it is claimed that Liverpool could rival Juventus for the signing of Teun Koopmeiners, who worked under Slot at AZ Alkmaar, but their focus is on Ederson. Should the speculation be genuine, the Reds will have Premier League competition for the former Corinthians midfielder.

Manchester United, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Ederson, with a fee in the region of €50million (£42m) mooted. Former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders explained how the club needed to continue the hard work and the foundation laid by Jurgen Klopp over his nine-year tenure at Anfield.

The German deployed his gegenpressing football and the high-press became a staple for the club, which has been implemented from the first-team and throughout the Reds academy.

Lijnders said in an interview with The Athletic: "You need a coach like Arne who is close to what we tried to do over the years, in terms of having the ball in the opposition half, pressing, counter-pressing — he’s very strategical in that point of view.

"He’s made good steps and now it’s the chance for him to make another big step."

Ederson ranks high in his defensive numbers following Atalanta's historic campaign. The Bergamo club won their first piece of silverware in 61 years after beating Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League, and on course to their feat they brushed aside Liverpool - winning 3-1 on aggregate after a shock win at Anfield.

The 24-year-old is in the 72nd percentile for tackles and 85th percentile for interceptions. Speaking after the win of Xabi Alonso's side, Ederson spoke about how his game has changed and his comments could offer a clue to Liverpool over his strengths.

"The coach told me to be more aggressive, as I had some pace and power, so I needed to use those characteristics more," said Ederson. "This season, I got a more used to the high press, so I was able to be more attacking too and added that to my game as well."
