Edgecumbe Man Helps Residents and Pets to Evacuate Flooded Town

A group of Edgecumbe residents fled the flooded town aboard a flat-bed truck after the community was ordered to evacuate on Thursday, April 6, in the wake of heavy rainfall.

Tautini Hahipene, who recorded this footage, assisted fellow residents, and their pets, in leaving the inundated town after a retaining wall on the Rangitaiki River broke open.

Many were forced to leave via motorboat, while the Whakatane District Council called a state of emergency, the New Zealand Herald reported. Credit: Tautini Hahipene via Storyful
