Edinburgh bin lorry wipes out lamppost outside homes on city centre street

Bosses have launched an investigation after a bin lorry sent a lamppost crashing to the pavement on a residential street.

The incident took place on Rothesay Place in the west end at around 2.20pm on Monday, November 11.

Images from the scene show the Hamilton waste lorry beside the wrecked pole which is bent at an acute angle across a lane.

One of the bin workers can be seen looking at the fallen post assessing the damage.

An onlooker said she “heard the crash and rushed to the window”.

A Hamilton chief confirmed their vehicle was responsible for the accident following an “internal investigation”.

He added the incident prompted them to take “appropriate steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future”.

The onlooker told Edinburgh Live workers arrived within an hour to assess the damage and ensure any “danger was removed promptly”.

A Hamilton Waste & Recycling Ltd spokesperson said: “I can confirm that our Hamilton Waste & Recycling Ltd vehicle was involved in an accident on Rothesay Place on Monday, November 11, which resulted in a lamppost being knocked over.

“Following an internal investigation, we have reviewed the circumstances of the incident and have taken appropriate steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“At Hamilton, safety is a top priority for us, and we take incidents like this very seriously. We are committed to working closely with all relevant parties to address any issues and ensure all necessary actions are taken.”
