Edinburgh family announce heart-breaking closure of hardware shop after 40 years

An Edinburgh family have made the decision to close their hardware store after 40 years of business.

Poundsavers located at 37-41 Nicolson Street first opened back in 1984 by brothers Abdul Hamid, 70, Naseer Ahmad, 64, Khurshid Ahmad, 68 and has continued to be a family-run business.

However, due to retirement, the popular shop will close its doors on December 31 with a closing down sale set to take place.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, general manager Faisal Ahmad said, 31: "It's really hard to digest. It's very emotional for the whole family.

"We are very close and this has been at our core for the past 40 years.. It's really sad to see it go but we are hopefully going to go onto bigger and better things."

The 31-year-old added taking on the business 40-years-ago was a "risk" for the brothers.

He continued: "It was one of the first of its kind in the area but thankfully it paid off and it's still successful now. They went through four recessions and the pandemic so we have been through lots of changes.

"Customers who aren’t aware we are closing down yet have said to us ‘thank god you’re here’ so we have felt we are letting people down. You really do forget how many people know you in the area and we just want to thank everyone who has supported us."

The family are going to continue to trade but will move away from hardware retail with plans to open a new office in the same area.
