A popular Edinburgh pub has been taken over by pals who hope to create a 'local boozer'.

Duo Robbie Ewan Wills and Tiado Puehringer have moved into The Mash Tun on Easter Road, after former owners announced they'd be leaving back in July. After some renovations, the new venue is now pouring pints - celebrating with a launch event on September 27.

The new owners hope to create a relaxed spot for locals, and are aiming to serve up meals soon. They made the decision to break out on their own after growing "tired" of working in hospitality jobs where those above them were raking in the cash.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Tiado said: "About eight weeks ago we took over the pub.

"Me and Robbie have repainted the whole place, we've moved away from being a sports and football pub. We want to be a local boozer for regulars, people who want a pint in the evening.

"We've just got new chefs in for food, so we'll be releasing a food menu soon."

Both Robbie and Tiado have worked in The Tourmalet for some time, where they've gained the experience to open their own spot. They added: "We worked there for a long time, we helped get it popular and busy.

"We want to incorporate that vibe here."

The Mash Tun has already reopened, with renovations works carried out over the last eight weeks. The owners have been holding off on a reopening event until they've got it looking "how they want", with September 27 in their sights.

The duo say they set out to open their own venue after growing "tired" of working for someone else. Tiado continued: "We both got to the point where we were working minimum wage jobs for someone else who makes a lot of money.

"They haven't really done all that much, the staff on the floor made the last place we worked popular. We thought, why not do our own thing where we don't have to deal with anyone else but ourselves.

"If it doesn't work out, it's nobodies fault but ours. If it does, we benefit.

"You've got something you can be proud of."

The Mash Tun is pouring pints, with locals already impressed. The team added: "For having started eight weeks ago, things are going in the right direction.

"It's what we expected, a bit better even. People seem to really like what we're doing.

"They like what we've done with the space."

The Mash Tun's former owners announced they would be leaving back in July. They added: "It's with a heavy heart I have to report this is the final week of the Mash Tun in its current setup.

"We will be closing after the Euro final this Sunday and handing the pub back to Heineken.

"As sad as it is, all good things must come to an end and it's time for someone new to come and have a go."

The pub is open from 4pm-1am.
