Edinburgh woman says she was 'embarrassed' of where she came from as a schoolgirl

A Miss GB Edinburgh contestant has opened up on her insecurities regarding her ethnic background as a teenager.

Sarah Ghavabesh , 26, says she was 'embarrassed' about where she came from due to being the only Iranian in her school. She said that only now, she feels truly proud of her ethnic background.

The 26-year-old explained that she wants to "push the narrative" that you don't have to only speak English or look or act a certain way to fit in.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, she said: "I used to be embarrassed of where I came from in terms of being the only Iranian and the only Middle-Eastern when I was in school. I was always asked why my name was so long and funny.

"Only recently am I fully proud to say that I am an Iranian but it really did take a while for me. When people would make comments towards me, I would be so worried and embarrassed, but a lot of time, I think people have really false perceptions.

"I know I am a good person and I am trying to do good by others too and it's not something that I should take personally. If anything it should push you forward.

"I think as I have gotten older, it’s been easier to deal with comments. I have taken a lot of time to reflect and now see it as people liking to push their insecurities on me."

Sarah is hoping to show other woman that you can do whatever you want in life and came across the Miss Great Britain competition last year after it popped up as an ad.

She said: "I am so nervous. For me, Miss GB is all about putting yourself out there and showing people that you can do whatever you want. I entered the competition last year and it came up as an ad.

"I have always watched toddlers and tiaras, I have always seen Miss Worldwide, Miss International, Miss Universe and I always thought it was so cool to see amazing females walk on stage with such poise and elegance.

"My family are from Iran but I was born in Edinburgh. One of the miss GB contestants last year was Palestinian and she is who I am looking up to at the moment. She came from a different background and heritage and actually won it.

"That’s what I want to push - that you don’t have to be a certain look or type to fit in."

Sarah is set to take part in Miss GB Edinburgh on July 6 at Prestonfield House. She is also hoping to raise money for Alex’s Wish and Cancer Research U.K which you can find out more about here.
