Dozens of fighterfighters battled a blaze at a scrapyard amid fears nearby gas cylinders would have exploded because of the heat.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen billowing into the air as fire crews from six stations tackled the flames in the Edmonton refuse heap.

Crews made the area a hazard zone as they feared gas cylinders would explode if the flames that covered more than half of the scrapyard reach them.

Some 81 firefighters tackled the blaze that began shortly before 11.15am in Eley Road on Saturday.

Fire crews from Edmonton, Tottenham, Chingford, Enfield, Stoke Newington and Holloway fire stations attended.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”

He later added that the fire was under control by 1.50pm.
