EastEnders star Shane Richie has hinted at a scrapped storyline involving Peggy Mitchell and Alfie Moon that "would've changed everything".

The actor, who's played the lovable cheeky chappy Alfie since 2002, took to Twitter yesterday evening (October 20) to post a picture of himself reuniting with Barbara Windsor, who played the Queen Vic landlady until last year.

"A storyline on Easties back in 2002 was talked about but never came to screen, would've changed everything, but you don't wanna know !" he captioned the picture.

But while he's saying we may not want to know what it was, he may have forgotten that he potentially hinted at this mysterious storyline before.

Alfie explained on The Graham Norton Show back in 2015 that there was talk of a love interest story for the pair before coupling him up with Kat Slater.

"When I started the show I heard a rumour that I was brought in as a love interest for Peggy," he said two years ago. "They were going to do this 'Cougar' story, but then they saw the chemistry between Jessie [Wallace] and me and the writers said, 'Let's make this a slow burner.'"

But seeing as we don't know for sure if that's what Shane was hinting at in his new tweets, many fans came up with their own theories as to what this apparent storyline involved.

One person suggested that Peggy was actually "Alfie's mum", while another theorised: "Alfie, in his determination to be vic landlord, marries Peggy".

On the whole, fans were just frustrated with Shane's teasing. I mean, he can't really leave us hanging like that!
