Travelling first-class is every long-haul traveller's dream. Instead of squeezing into an economy class seat like a tinned sardine, you can recline in comfort, with complimentary drinks and gourmet meals. Before you take your flight, you'll benefit from lounge access and be treated like a VIP.

Unfortunately, the cost of upgrading can be astronomical. For those of us with champagne tastes who don't have a few thousand pounds to spare, help is at hand. We have trawled the internet to get the best expert advice on how to get a flight upgrade without paying for it. Read on to find out how.

Be a frequent flyer

Most experts agree that joining frequent flyer schemes is the best way to get a free upgrade. If you build up points and miles, this will give you a certain status at check-in and you'll be at the front of the queue when it comes to upgrades.

Dress smartly

It's also important to look the part. You'll have to ditch the flip-flops and t-shirts if you want to fly first class.

Celebrate something

The oldest trick in the book is to tell the airline you're celebrating something special. If you're celebrating a big birthday or on a honeymoon with your beloved, by all means let the check-in staff know and you might get lucky.

Be flexible

If the cabin crew ask you to move seats, and you agree, they might give you a better seat than your original one. Give up your seat so a family can sit together, and you might reap the benefits in first class.

Don't be afraid to speak up

If you have a medical reason for needing extra comfort, don't be afraid to ask. Anyone suffering from a bad back or someone who has recently undergone surgery should always ask for a better seat.

Travel solo

Solo travellers are more likely to get upgraded. Big families don't have a chance as nice seats are at a premium.

Get there early

Since business and first-class upgrades are limited, you can increase your chances of an upgrade by arriving at the airport extra early.

Be nice

Last but not least, be nice to the staff - this will vastly improve your chances of an upgrade.
