Eight hurt as 'drunk' Britons plough into pedestrians in Marbella hit-and-run

Two Britons whose car ploughed into pedestrians as they tried to escape police in a Spanish resort appeared to be drunk, say authorities.

Eight people, including a 12-day-old baby and the driver, were injured during the incident in Marbella.

The Civil Guard said the car sped off when officers tried to stop it at a motorway checkpoint on Sunday evening.

It headed into the Costa del Sol city, where it hit pedestrians on a crowded avenue before smashing into other cars.

A police spokeswoman said the driver and passenger held British passports and appeared to be drunk.

Marbella24horas said the pair, aged 28 and 29, tested positive for alcohol and drugs.

The incident is said to have happened after an argument in a club on Sunday at around 9pm.

Spain's interior ministry said three people had been injured on the street and four others in a crash as the car tried to get away.

The driver of the car was also seriously injured.

One of the injured remains in hospital with a broken leg and police are reportedly investigating whether the collision was accidental or deliberate.
