Election Countdown: The Musical Highlights Of #GE2015

There's a while yet to go until the May 7 general election, and yet the vote has already taken on a distinctly musical slant.

Has the election taken on a musical twist?
Has the election taken on a musical twist?

With only weeks to go till the General Election of 2015, this campaign has taken on something of a musical slant.

The musical theme was kicked off by the Lib Dems, who released this dub of Uptown Funk, claiming their party was "hot".

Ukip's contribution to the chorus came in the form of an Abba-inspired ring tone. Lyrics: "Vote Ukip. Vote Ukip. Believe in Britain. (Repeat.)"

The Green Party released a slick musical parody showcasing the similarities between the four biggest contenders (“Does he seem like he’s redundant, or do I?”).

Their second contribution to the musical highlights package came in the form of an earnest video by supporter Moony Opaque, who urges those who are “sick of politics” to vote Green.

And who can forget the time Jolene and the election debates inspired this Green Party supporter to release a ballad urging the public to "Go Green, go Green, go Gre-ee-een"?

Sky News was responsible for this lip-synching treat that's been played so frequently we may all have All-4-One’s 1994 hit, I Swear, stuck in our head until June.

Russell Brand got in on the act by releasing the Emperor's New Clothes rap as a promotion for his new film.

Thee Faction, the self-described "unpleasant socialist R&B band with an explicit political agenda", has released a track exhorting the public to "choose an enemy". No-one is spared in this one. Even Richard Branson and Katie Hopkins make the list of "enemies" to choose between before children take turns pelting David Cameron and Nigel Farage with toys.

And, while not strictly music, spoken word artist Gary Turk's exhort to voting may be the most lyrical and thoughtful of all. The London-based writer whose poetry about social media went viral last year urges young voters not to "let their lives be dictated by the old and billionaires".

But it's the Official Monster Raving Loony party that has really brought music to the core of its campaign with an announcement that they will roll out free transport for all musicians.

The new policy is introduced in their A-Team inspired video manifesto. "Because musicians on buses and trams would just make life better for everybody," explains candidate for parliament, Johnny Disco.

Makes sense.
