Electric cars: Three-wheeled, zero-emission 'Solo' vehicle to take to the streets

A futuristic, electric three-wheeled car set to take to the streets of Los Angeles later this year could become the future of sustainable travel.

The 'Solo' model, made by Vancouver-based Electra Meccanica, costs about $15,500 and has been pre-ordered by about 70,000 people in the USA, according to Bloomberg.

The tiny car, which holds just the driver, has a charging range of 100 miles (160 kilometres) and a top speed of 82 mph (130 kph).

It takes three hours to fully charge and can go from 0-60 mph in eight seconds.

According to Electra Meccanica, benefits of the tiny car include convenience of parking and compatibility with universal charging points.

The charging point for the compact Solo is tucked away underneath the number plate.

Its makers claim the Solo is easier to maintain than most cars - simply because it has fewer parts.

The Solo is already zooming around the streets of Vancouver and is due to be released in the USA in December 2019.
