Avengers: Infinity War sees the longstanding comic book relationship of Scarlet Witch and Vision finally make it to the big screen.

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany will get down to some human-AI romance in Anthony and Joe Russo's film, but fans will know that this could just be the beginning of their problems.

The characters' off-and-on relationship (including a period of marriage) has been going on for over three decades, and Olsen says she would love to tackle it in the movies.

"We would love to do that," Olsen told Digital Spy. "The babies and the fake babies, and her going mad. I would love the opportunity to get to do that."

In the comics, Scarlet Witch conceived twins via magic (which is probably the only option when your husband is a robot). Unfortunately, it turns out that they were created from the soul of a demon, and when she lost her children, she also lost her mind.

She was responsible for the death of various Avengers including Vision, and later magically transformed millions of mutants into ordinary humans, resulting in countless deaths.

As for Vision, he has died and been resurrected a few times, and has gone through a similar cycle of developing human emotions only to revert to a heartless AI. It goes without saying that this has all been a recipe for romantic dysfunction.

Before they get to that crazy stuff, Bettany and Olsen hope that the relationship that has been growing since 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron will form an emotional core for Infinity War.

"This has been the richest for storyline for us, I think," said Bettany. "It was great to play.

"I think it's a nice way in for people, emotionally, because not many people have been a Norse god, but a lot of people have fallen in love. And to see that happening under extraordinary circumstances is kind of fun."

Avengers: Infinity War will be released in the UK on April 26 and in the US on April 27.
