Elland man totally transforms his life after signing up to free weight loss scheme

A man has managed to lose an incredible 5st 7lbs after being told he was too overweight for surgery.

Rob Foster, 60, from Elland has turned his life around with Slimming World after being denied a vital knee replacement operation due to his weight.

He struggled with his knee for years but his lifestyle of excessive eating and lack of exercise saw his doctor refuse to do the surgery due to potential health complications related to his size.

Sick of living with the pain, Rob joined Slimming World - including twelve weeks free on the Calderdale Better Living referral scheme through his GP - in a desperate final attempt to shed the weight and he soon started to see results.

He said: "It has without doubt totally changed my life. I had to lose weight for a replacement knee operation and was told the surgery wouldn’t happen unless I lost the weight which had crept on over a few years of been inactive and eating unhealthily.

““I joined with my partner Samantha in June 2022, we have both done extremely well and helped each other along the way. I quickly lost the weight needed to have the operation and carried on losing, going on to reach my target weight after 18 months.

“Losing weight doesn’t have to be a chore, it can be fun. My overall perception of food and eating has changed dramatically and now eating healthy and enjoying healthy food is a lifestyle change which is enjoyable and second nature.

"Now over 5 stone lighter, I not only have a new knee but also a new outlook on life in general, my health has improved along with my wellbeing and mental health.

“My life has changed considerably for the better, I feel better, look better, my health has improved, my mental health has improved, my confidence has returned, and clothes also fit much better. The compliments I have received from friends, family and work colleagues have been amazing.

"I now am much more mobile than I have been for many years which is absolutely great. It has given me a massive boost and a better quality of life than I had before my knee operation and before I lost the weight."

Rob won Mr Sleek in November 2023 has since been crowned Man of the Year 2024 for the second year running by the Elland Slimming World group members.

Rob added: "I was so proud to win the Mr Sleek competition and to go on and be crowned Man of the Year for the second year was the icing on the cake. The competitions are such a great event, everyone brings a dish for the table that we all try and then share recipes. Myself and the other nominees shared our weight loss journey and the members vote for their winner. Being chosen the winner for me has been fantastic and very humbling.”

Michelle, the consultant at Elland Cricket Club Slimming World, said: “Rob’s determination and motivation has never faded – he’s a real inspiration and I hope he inspires other people in Elland to join our group and take the first step towards losing weight for good.

"Men often think Slimming World isn’t a man’s world but actually research shows that men lose more weight than women when they join, as well as dramatically improving their physical and mental health. I’d love to welcome more new members, they will be supported and celebrated every step of the way.”
