Elon Musk announces X update that leaves some upset
Elon Musk has revealed plans for social media platform X to modify its blocking tool, allowing blocked accounts to view public posts but not interact with them. At present, if a user blocks another on the site, the blocked account cannot see or engage with any activity on the blocker's profile.
Reacting to a post on the topic, Mr Musk stated: "High time this happened." He further explained: "The block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, public post (sic)."
However, the proposed change has sparked concerns about safety and security on the platform, particularly for women. Many users responding to Musk's post highlighted that the block feature is often used to address real-world safety issues. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter.

Several pointed out that many women utilise the feature to shield themselves from direct threats of abuse and violence. Critics argue that permitting blocked accounts to still view a user's posts could diminish the protection currently provided by the feature, potentially leaving vulnerable individuals exposed.
A 2021 report by Refuge, a charity dedicated to the safety of women and children, found that over one in three women in the UK have encountered online abuse on social media equating to around 11 million women nationwide.
The report revealed that one in six women have suffered abuse from a partner or ex-partner, and online abuse is twice as prevalent among young women, with 62% admitting to experiencing it. Neither X nor Mr Musk has given any indication of when the proposed change might be implemented.
