ITV has revealed they will be changing the theme tunes to some of their most popular shows to mark the unveiling of the new John Lewis Christmas advert.

The network vowed to honour the latest edition of the department stores’ hotly-anticipated festive ad, The Boy and The Piano, starring Sir Elton John.

Announcing the news on Twitter ITV posted: “To reflect this year's John Lewis Christmas advert, The Boy and The Piano, which has its first TV broadcast on ITV this evening, the title music of some of our shows has been given a piano twist today.”

It appeared the changes begun on Wednesday with Coronation Street abandoning its usual string orchestra and trading it in for a piano-only version of the iconic intro.

Emmerdale also followed suit leaving viewers baffled by the change, while others took the hint ahead of the launch for the ad.

One user wore: “Piano theme tunes this evening??? Any clues? Or is it just a ploy to get #Emmerdale and #Corrie trending???”

Another posted: “They've done it all day, apparently it's to do with the launch of the new #JohnLewis advert. I've heard its Elton John playing the piano, we are meant to find out tomorrow at 9.15pm.”

A third added: “I think it's to do with Elton John playing piano and the John Lewis Christmas ad being aired on ITV tomorrow."

This year’s advert sees 71-year-old Sir Elton sat at the piano at home, playing the first few notes of his famous hit Your Song.

From there, it works backwards through his life, from some of his best-known gigs, to him in the recording studio and finally to him as a young boy receiving a piano from his mother and grandmother for Christmas.

It ends with Sir Elton sat at the same piano in the present day and the tag line: “Some gifts are more than just a gift.”
