Among many other things, 2016 was known as the year Ed Sheeran seemingly disappeared off the face of the planet – and it turns out Elton John was glad.
Just kidding! He merely thought Ed needed to take a break from music, telling Rolling Stone: "Yeah, he was so omnipresent. I said, 'Ed, even I'm sick of you. Go away.'"
"And he did. He just went to the Far East with his girlfriend, had a great time, put on a lot of weight, ate food and came back," Elt continued.
"One thing I said to him when he went, I said, 'Don't put on weight,' because he's very prone to put on weight like I am.
"And he came back heavy, but he lost it all for the album. He just went away and had a great time," he added. "And it was the most brilliant thing he could have done, because it refreshes your soul.
"He did it, and it's the best thing he could have done. He was too omnipresent."
During last week's Comic Relief, we saw Ed Sheeran reduced to tears as he heard the plight of poverty-stricken young children in Liberia.
While visiting the country, he met a number of orphaned children sleeping rough on a beach, and among them was JD, who was sleeping in a canoe with "no pillow or duvet".
After Ed was spurred on to secure a safe future for the young boy, JD has now spoken out and thanked the star for his help.
