Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka was certainly not awash with sympathy for Barcelona after they inflicted the heaviest defeat suffered by the Catalans in a European competition.

Quique Setien – who is expected to be sacked off the back of this latest embarrassment – could only watch on as Bayern Munich destroyed Barcelona 8-2 to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

To add further torment, Philippe Coutinho – on loan at Bayern from Barca – scored twice and provided an assist in the rout.

So much of the build-up to the match was dominated by the question: Will Lionel Messi’s brilliance be enough to stop the collective strength of Bayern Munich?

"No, it didn’t hurt, it was fun actually," Goretzka told Sky Sports Germany. "It’s difficult to put this into words so soon after the game. I think it will take a couple of days to process this result.”

"We have so much confidence, but as we just said in the changing room we've taken the first of three steps."
