EMCORE's (NASDAQ:EMKR) Stock Price Has Reduced 57% In The Past Three Years

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the EMCORE Corporation (NASDAQ:EMKR) share price has gained 18% in the last three months. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 57% in the last three years. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. While many would remain nervous, there could be further gains if the business can put its best foot forward.

Given that EMCORE didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last three years EMCORE saw its revenue shrink by 9.7% per year. That is not a good result. With revenue in decline, and profit but a dream, we can understand why the share price has been declining at 16% per year. Of course, it's the future that will determine whether today's price is a good one. We don't generally like to own companies that lose money and can't grow revenues. But any company is worth looking at when it makes a maiden profit.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that EMCORE shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 29% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 5% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that EMCORE is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
