Emeli Sande Admits She Struggled With Fame And ‘Lived Like A Hermit’ For THREE Years

Fame can be a cruel mistress (so we’re told), especially when it’s thrust upon you so quickly.

So spare a thought for Emeli Sande, who, after going from being a trainee doctor to having the UK’s biggest-selling album of 2012 in a matter of months, ended up getting so “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON” about it all, that she had to basically go away and live like a hermit – FOR THREE YEARS.

We feel a bit bad when we don’t leave the house on a weekend, so lord knows how Emeli’s doing.

Emeli – who was literally EVERYWHERE in 2012 – told Nick Grimshaw’s Radio One Breakfast Show that she ‘had to slow everything down’.

She said: “It sounds a bit dramatic but I just wanted to disappear. I just had this overwhelming sensation and the realisation everything had to stop. And then, slowly, it did.

“The label let me go and be a hermit for three years and trusted me to put together music that was important for me. I felt I had to slow everything down. I wanted stuff to write about and I wanted to really experience things on a deep level.“

"I wanted to go back to the way I made the first album, not thinking about any anticipation, just focusing on if this is good music or not.”

She also admitted that if it hadn’t had been for her sister, she wouldn’t have released her latest album – Long Live The Angels – due out in November.

“It definitely got to a point where the label were like, ‘Maybe someone should have a chat’,” she said.

“But it was when my sister was like, ‘You know what, you need to put out this album’ – that’s when I knew it was time to get on with it.”

The seismic impact of the last four years clearly had an effect on the Scottish singer, who ended up marrying – and then divorcing – her boyfriend of seven years, Adam Gouraguine. As a result, the new album is apparently PRETTY personal.

“I feel like this album is a diary. I was always writing,” she revealed.

“It’s very raw, very emotional. It’s a very soulful album. I’ve been 100% honest on this album. Everything is out there.

“If you want to get to know me, then you will with this album.”
