At least 36 people died after a freight train and passenger train collided north of Larissa, Greece, late on Tuesday, February 28, with the number of dead expected to rise, authorities said.

A spokesman of the Greek fire service, Vasilios Vathrakogiannis, said 66 injured people were receiving treatment and search operations to find people trapped at the site was continuing.

According to data from Hellenic Train, there were 342 passengers and 10 staff members on the passenger train, while two workers were on the commercial train, Vathrakogiannis said.

Vathrakogiannis said 150 firefighters were at the scene, while 30 ambulances were deployed. Firefighters working at the scene were focusing on the first three carriages of the passenger train, he said..
