Two people were pulled from the sea after a boat capsized off the coast of Cornwall over the weekend. Emergency crews were alerted to a boat that had capsized, with people in the water just before 4.30pm yesterday, Sunday, June 9.

Gig rowers in the bay had spotted that a small vessel capsized east of the Gear Pole, with two individuals in the sea needing assistance. One person was rescued by the lifeboat while the other was picked up by a nearby yacht before being handed over to the lifeboat.

Both people who were pulled from the sea were extremely cold and showed signs of hypothermia, prompting a call for an ambulance. The lifeboat crew kept the casualties warm, with one receiving oxygen.

The lifeboat, which launched from Penlee, then headed back to Newlyn so that the casualties could be warmed inside the lifeboat station until the ambulance arrived. The Penlee Lifeboat re-launched and the crew recovered the vessel and personal belongings, returning to Newlyn.

Coxswain Patch Harvey praised the actions of the gig rowers and the yacht. They said: "The actions of the gig rowers informing the Coastguard immediately and the assistance of the yacht helped save two lives, everyone involved did a great job".

He also reminded everyone to always wear a personal flotation device and suitable clothing for the forecasted weather conditions.

A statement from Penlee Lifeboat echoed the warning. It said: "Always carry a means of calling for help on your person. You must be able to reach it easily in an emergency. If it can’t be reached, it’s no help.

"Consider taking a mobile phone with the SafeTrx app when rowing in open water. Develop your skills. Contact your national governing body, or your local club or watersports centre, to find out which training is best for you."
