A County Durham road has reopened to motorists after it was closed following a smell of gas but emergency works will continue into Tuesday.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) were called out to Redworth village on Sunday after a smell of gas was reported. County Durham Fire and Rescue Service were called to assist and reported an ongoing incident on its social media pages.

Local residents were urged to keep their doors and windows closed, while drivers were asked to avoid the area. The A6072 between Shildon Mill and Redworth was closed as NGN undertook emergency gas network repair works due to a "utilities issue" - the first phase of which are now complete.

The road is now open in both directions, but temporary traffic lights will be in place on Tuesday, November 26 so that engineers can complete the final stage of the works. Gas supply to homes has been unaffected, and will not be affected on Tuesday.

Steve Pigott, NGN business operations lead, said: "Our team worked hard to fix this issue quickly and safely, so that the road could reopen as quickly as possible. The work on Tuesday has been scheduled to cause a minimum of disruption, but I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) spokesperson said: "We were called at 11.44am on Sunday, November 24 to assist Northern Gas Networks with a utilities issue in Redworth, Newton Aycliffe."

"One fire engine from Newton Aycliffe attended. Crews then left the scene at around 2pm."

NGN encouraged anyone who smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide to call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. The line is in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
