Emergency services descend on Liverpool's Pier Head
Emergency services swarmed the Pier Head on Liverpool's waterfront today. HM Coastguard, North West Ambulance Service and Merseyside Police set up a small cordon as the River Mersey was searched.
People were seen gathering on the waterfront near the ferry terminal as they watched emergency services come and go, with two NWAS Incident Response Units also at the scene. Photos shared with the ECHO show a Merseyside Police scientific support vehicle at the scene, with one person who works nearby explaining how forensic teams were seen.
It is unclear as to what time the incident happened, but the same person told the ECHO "something was found in the water.". Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO it was assisting with the incident but it was being led by HM Coastguard.

One man claimed to have seen a man rescued while in Matou, saying the casualty walked to the ambulance once out of the water.
When approached by the ECHO, a spokesperson for HM Coastguard said it was Merseyside Police leading the incident. As a result, no explanation has been formally given for the scene at Pier Head. Emergency services left the area at around 2pm.
