Emilia Wickstead was perhaps touting for a new, very high profile client at her typically pretty collection which was shown last night at London Fashion Week’s penultimate day.

The New Zealand-born London-based designer, whose creations are a favourite of actresses and royalty alike - Diane Kruger, Gwyneth Paltrow and the Duchess of Cambridge are all fans - may well have had Meghan Markle in mind as someone who might dress in pieces from this collection. Wickstead is, after all, one of the top names being floated to design Markle’s bridal gown.

This catwalk offering was less Windsor castle wedding attire, though, and more royal visit meet and greet, with dresses and the designer’s signature all-in-one tailoring appearing in pleasing shades of mustard, cherry, rose pink and sky blue.

Stiff white cotton belts, cuffs and collars, some squared off to resemble sailor bibs, were decorated with folk-style stitched red heart motifs, and a bold candy cane stripe in blue and claret made for some real statement pieces.

Tartan was a recurring theme, reimagined in gold and pink on trouser suits, as well as a more classic red and black plaid.

Prince of Wales checks featured heavily, too, adorning coats, blazers and trousers. Sleeves were voluminous and balloon in shape; trousers high waisted and cropped with a mini flare. Skirt hems were long and necklines high, continuing the modest mood that has been seen at many shows this week.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the collection from this designer known for her formalwear was a pair of jeans and lots and lots of knitwear.

However, since evening attire is the brand’s bread and butter it too was well represented.

To this end, black dresses featuring an English rose design were embellished with tiny beads, while plum coloured and metallic frocks were finished with black crystal encrusted bralettes - all very fitting for the red carpet. London Fashion Week finishes this evening.
