The final day of London Fashion Week was opened this morning by Spanish-born Emilio de la Morena, whose fans include Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Palermo and Kate Moss.

There was a clue to the collection’s inspiration even before any models appeared on the catwalk, which was covered in a sugar pink carpet and backdropped with swathes of turquoise silk.

Morena had found a tweed woven at the French mill he uses that reminded him of the film Clueless. To this end, models took to the floor in tailored bolero jackets and tweed A-line mini skirts that were reminiscent of the film’s protagonist Cher Horowitz and her Beverly Hills girl gang.

The designer - who studied in London at both Central Saint Martins and the London College of Fashion, and previously worked for LFW alumni Jonathan Saunders - is known for his architectural cocktail frocks and a love of velvet and lace.

Accordingly, silk and organza mini dresses in shades of emerald and fuchsia featured oversized frilled shoulders and statement ruffles, while platform sandals appeared in a matching velvet colour palette and the same ‘Clueless’ tweed as used on clothing. Many outfits were styled with thick grey ribbed socks to reiterate the preppy vibe.

Another of de la Morena’s signatures is the use of traditional Spanish fabrics, and this season it came in the form of brocades in shocking pink and aquamarine.

There was a more demure angle to the collection too, with an injection of navy and ivory midi and maxi dresses, as well as trouser suits featuring ruched corset belts styled over jackets.

Separates also featured heavily, and those hesitant at the thought of a boob tube may reconsider at the idea of teaming one with a rib-high calf-length pencil skirt.

London Fashion Week will end this evening and finishes with a high profile show and closing party from US label Tommy Hilfiger, ahead of Milan Fashion Week, which begins on Wednesday.
