Who is Emma Stone's fiance Dave McCary? Inside the Cruella De Vil actress' engagement

Emma Stone kicks off what is likely to be a string of Christmas engagements, as it was revealed earlier today she is getting married to Saturday Night Live’s Dave McCary.

In a post published to McCary’s Instagram account, the pair were seen grinning in a selfie as Stone flashed a large engagement ring.

The news came as a surprise to many as Stone and McCary have been private about their relationship. After meeting on the set of SNL in 2016, they began dating and have occasionally been seen on outings together (Stone is notably absent from McCary’s Instagram.)

As one of the funniest women in Hollywood, Stone appears to have met her match in McCary.

Who is Dave McCary?

Dave McCary is a comedy writer and director who has been working for Saturday Night Live since 2013, according to People.

He began with YouTube sketch channel GoodNeighborStuff, which he and fellow SNL cast members Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett and former SNL writer Nick Rutherford worked on together.

The channel eventually became a cult hit on the platform for its surreal comedy shorts.

After the group was scooped up by Lorne Michaels and the SNL team, McCary turned his attention to writing for its cast as well as guest stars including Harry Styles, Woody Harrelson - and eventually his fiance Emma Stone. He also occasionally directs sketches and in 2017 directed his close friend Kyle Mooney and Star Wars actor Mark Hamill in the film Brigsby Bear, which they co-wrote together.

McCary’s work has garnered him industry-wide recognition, nominated three times for a Primetime Emmy alongside the rest of SNL’s writing cast. His solo feature Brigsby Bear was also nominated for an award at Cannes Film Festival.

How did he and Emma Stone meet?

According to People, McCary and Emma Stone first met when the actress hosted SNL in 2016. McCary directed Stone in a short called Wells for Boys, which saw Stone play the mother of a sensitive boy who is given a Fisher-Price well to “wish upon, confide in and reflect by."

She returned to host SNL earlier this year alongside Korean supergroup BTS.

How long have he and Emma Stone been dating?

The couple first met at the end of 2016 on the set of SNL. A source confirmed to People in October 2017 that the pair had been together for ‘at least three months’, which would make their total relationship two years.

The pair are very private about their life as a couple, though they have made a few high profile appearances together. McCary joined Stone this year at the Oscars, Met Gala after party and the Screen Actors Guild awards, where they were photographed with Bradley Cooper.
