Emma Thompson has claimed that Harvey Weinstein is just "the top of a very particular iceberg" in a damning BBC interview.

The actress appeared on Newsnight opposite presenter Emily Maitlis, when she was asked her views on several allegations of sexual misconduct made against the film producer.

Describing Weinstein as a "predator", Thompson said that she did not know about his alleged behaviour, although she went on to suggest that there are "many" predators operating in Hollywood.

She also said that sexual harassment has been part of the women's world "since time immemorial".

"What I find sort of extraordinary is that this man is at the top of a very particular iceberg," said Thompson.

"I don't think you can describe him as a sex addict, he's a predator. That's different. He's at the top of, as it were, the ladder of a system of harassment and belittlement and bullying and interference.

"This has been part of our world, women's world, since time immemorial."

Allegations of Weinstein's misconduct first appeared in a damning New York Times exposé, where actresses including Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan went on record to reveal apparent disturbing encounters they had with him.

Since then, actresses including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cara Delevingne, Kate Beckinsale and Lea Seydoux have all come forward to accuse the producer of sexual impropriety.

The scandal has provoked worldwide outrage and in the latest turn of events, McGowan accused Weinstein of rape upon her return to Twitter yesterday.

Earlier this week, Weinstein's spokesperson strenuously denied "any allegations of non-consensual sex" made against the one-time Miramax producer.
