Emma Watson has revealed that she could have been playing an entirely different Disney Princess.

Talking to Total Film, she recalled how she was originally offered the role of Cinderella in Kenneth Branagh's live-action remake, but turned it down, with Lily James fitting into the glass slipper instead.

So why did Watson take on Belle in Beauty and the Beast?

"I didn't know they were going to make Beauty and the Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella. But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did," she explained.

Watson added that she accepted the role after director Bill Condon agreed to work with her on the character of Belle, with her job as an inventor being one of Watson's suggestions.

"There's this kind of outsider quality that Belle had, and the fact she had this really empowering defiance of what was expected of her," she enthused.

"In a strange way, she challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring. And also, she manages to keep her integrity and have a completely independent point of view."

We might have to wait until March 17 to see Watson's take on Belle, but we have already heard her singing.

During the Golden Globes, a clip was unveiled of her tackling the classic 'Belle (Reprise)' atop a hill that makes Beauty and the Beast look like The Sound of Music. Remind yourself of it below
