The British actress looks set to overtake Jennifer Lawrence as she continues to take a portion of the Disney film’s profits.
Less than a month since its theatrical release, Bill Condon’s live-action remake of the Disney classic continues to perform well and has now become 2017’s first film to reach the milestone.
Not only is Beauty and the Beast the first film of the year to reach $1 billion, it is also now officially the highest-grossing live action musical of all time.
It’s currently ranked at number 29 on the all-time worldwide box office list, and is expected to keep on climbing over the next few months.
The film’s continued success means that leading star Watson is still making money, having negotiated a special agreement with Disney.
While Watson was given a £2 million upfront fee, she is expected to get more than £15 million thanks to the deal that entitles her to a slice of the film’s worldwide earnings.
“I think she has the world in the palm of her hand,” said Liza Anderson, celebrity publicist and founder of Anderson Group Public Relations.
“She is the biggest star in the world right now. She can star in anything. She could produce. She’s America’s sweetheart and a global sweetheart. There’s no better position to be in right now. I’m sure she has Hollywood banging at her door."
The former child star made nearly £50 million as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series.
