Emmerdale actor James Moore has hit back at unkind fans who have criticised his physical appearance and style.

The actor, who has recently joined the ITV1 soap, expressed his opinion on Twitter after seeing a number of critical comments regarding his hair and how he looked, so decided to call them out on it.

‘To everyone who has commented about my hair, or my style,’ he began. ‘I think someone said I looked homeless – maybe you should be focusing more on the plot and less on superficialities. Acting isn’t a beauty contest.’

And people on Twitter were quick to back up the actor who made a point of reminding viewers that acting ‘isn’t a beauty contest’.

And his newly-formed fan account had the following to say: ‘THIS. Anyone who chooses to focus on your hair or clothing over your amazing performance as Ryan clearly isn’t watching the show for the right reasons.’

The actor plays Charity Dingle’s long lost biological son, Ryan, having joined the Yorkshire-set drama’s roster in June.

The storyline involving the two is an emotionally taut and triggering one for some viewers because it delves into the unpleasant fact that Charity had Ryan when she was just 14 after being raped.

In the most recent episode, Ryan’s feelings are hurt when he listens to a drunk voicemail from mum Charity, who leaves a particularly mean message saying she doesn’t want anything to do with him.

The actor himself has Ataxic Cerebral Palsy which affects his speech and physical movement, and in the soap plays a typically interesting an complicated member of the Dingle family.

The programme’s producer Kate Brooks has previously welcomed Moore to the soap, promising plenty of engaging episodes when he’s around: ‘We are absolutely delighted to welcome James to the show; an actor of real skill, talent and charisma.

‘As to be expected with his Dingle heritage, the character of Ryan is feisty, funny and reckless, and with an unquenchable zest for life.’

Catch Emmerdale weeknights, from 7pm, on ITV1.
