Emmerdale has aired a hugely disappointing update on Craig Reed.

Soap bosses confirmed earlier this week that a new whodunit storyline for the Dingle family will revolve around rapist Craig being murdered — and now viewers have an idea how that comes about.

In Wednesday's (October 25) episode, Lydia's police officer friend Jess had to share the news with the Dingle family that Craig wouldn't be charged with rape due to insufficient evidence.

"We've had to close the case for now but we will keep your complaint on file," Jess told Lydia.

Lydia put on a brave face, admitting she expected Craig to get away with what he'd done. The other Dingles were more outwardly furious to see Craig escaping justice.

"Since that copper came, I feel like I'm having a heart attack, like I'm about to burst," Sam confided in Samson and Mandy.

Sam threatened to ring Cain to take revenge on Craig, yet Mandy and Samson encouraged him to stay focused on Lydia. Sam was outraged and fled from the home, accusing his family of "doing nothing".

Producer Laura Shaw has teased that Craig's comeuppance and the subsequent whodunit mystery will form an "unmissable special week" for the Dingles next week.

"Stepping out of the usual Emmerdale style, a series of flashbacks will let the viewers in on the lies each person has told and the secrets they are hiding," the producer hinted.

"The week will truly keep everyone on the edge of their seats with each day more and more explosive secrets revealed that promise to have huge repercussions, shatter lives and cause fireworks in the Dingles bigger than ever seen before."

The soap has revealed that Craig will be found dead at Home Farm next Monday, forcing the family to convene 'Dingle Court' to figure out who killed the rapist.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
