Yahoo News Emmerdale boss: 'It's not the end for Pete and Leyla'
Emmerdale's producer Iain MacLeod has offered some new teasers on what the future holds for Pete Barton, Leyla Harding and Priya Sharma after Thursday night's big wedding episodes.
Viewers have just seen Pete and Leyla's wedding descend into farce as they both tried to do a runner from the venue, before catching each other making their getaways through toilet windows!
As it became clear that neither of them really wanted the ceremony to go ahead, the happy event was soon called off – much to the dismay of their loved ones.
Returning to his love rat ways, Pete then ended up making use of the honeymoon suite with his secret lover Priya Sharma as a blazing row between them turned into passion.
Speaking at an Emmerdale press event about where this story is going next, Iain revealed: "I think one of the most interesting things about this story is the friendship.
"It's interesting, because people talk a lot about Pete cheating on Leyla, but actually I think the real betrayal is between the two best friends. A lot of the focus of the story that follows is on that, actually.
"Romantically speaking, I think Pete realises the error of his ways. Once lust has ebbed away, you're left with the person you have a genuine connection with, and he's going to come to regret his actions.
"It's not the end of the story – and it's not the end of Pete and Leyla in some form or another."
Fiona Wade, who plays Priya, added: "The relationship between Priya and Pete has gone a little bit deeper than when it started. But Priya has really tried, and she really did want this to work for her best friend. Priya really wanted to be Leyla's best friend again and she felt very guilty, but there is so much chemistry there with Pete.
"It's just going to be difficult now, because Priya has to be there for her friend in the aftermath of all this."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
