Emmerdale boss Iain MacLeod has teased that the video of Emma Barton deliberately confusing Ashley Thomas will be "significant" in future storylines.

Ashley's final episode will air on Friday, but it seems that he could be vital in bringing down killer Emma from beyond the grave.

Fans know that Emma was responsible for causing last year's devastating road pile-up that killed her husband James, and left several others seriously injured.

Subsequent scenes then saw Emma take drastic action in a bid to keep her deadly secret safe as she deliberately confused Ashley, who was having incriminating memories about the fatal accident.

It seemed that this nasty tactic would finally lead to her downfall as the entire conversation was captured on the camera Ashley had set up to record a home video prior to Emma's visit. But unfortunately a frustrating twist saw Emma escape justice again when the incriminating camera was smashed by Laurel.

However, given that Laurel seemingly took out the memory card before putting the camera away, we always suspected that this wasn't the end of the story. And sure enough, Iain has now confirmed that the secret footage is a ticking timebomb that will be revisited in the future.

When asked at an Emmerdale press conference today (April 4) if the video was waiting to be watched, Iain said: "Yes it is. We were so thrilled with ourselves that we came up with that device at the time.

"Normally in soap, you get about a year into a murder mystery and you realise that you need to invent some evidence, meaning you have to retcon its existence back into the show. But we very deliberately put that in there as an exploding bomb. It will prove to be significant."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
