Emmerdale has confirmed that Maya Stepney has left the show.

Louisa Clein, who played the disgraced schoolteacher, made her final appearance on Thursday evening (June 20) as her deceitful character was sent to prison.

Following the judge's decision to give Maya a 12-month sentence, she was seen for the last time as she was escorted into a car outside the court.

A devastated Jacob declared his love for Maya and promised to wait for her as he looked on, but with witnesses watching, she failed to respond to his emotional outburst.

An Emmerdale spokesperson confirmed to Digital Spy that Louisa has now left the cast and we won't be seeing Maya in prison, where she'll be staying for the foreseeable future.

Upcoming episodes will explore the aftermath for Jacob and his family, who are still struggling to convince the teen to accept that he was groomed by Maya.

Viewers saw Maya get her comeuppance after she pleaded guilty to sending inappropriate texts to Jacob when he was 15.

Maya had hoped this would lead to a non-custodial sentence, but the judge ruled that she should be sent to prison for abusing her position of trust.

Although Jacob's family wanted Maya to face other charges too, this wasn't possible as the schoolboy refused to give any evidence against her.

Emmerdale currently airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with extra episodes at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
