Emmerdale confirms sad reason for Claudette's lies to Charles

Emmerdale spoilers follow from Tuesday's episode (May 30).

Emmerdale newcomer Claudette Anderson has finally confessed to her mischievous lies over her back pain.

Claudette was forced to come clean in Tuesday's episode after being caught out by Manpreet Sharma.

When Claudette visited the village last week to catch up with her son Charles, she soon found an excuse to stick around as she claimed to have suffered a nasty back injury.

The show's latest episode saw Claudette continue to milk her supposed back problem, seemingly enjoying every minute of Charles and Naomi both running around to meet her many demands.

Charles' suspicious partner Manpreet tried her best to warn him that Claudette was faking her injury, but he refused to think the worst of his mum.

Sadly for Claudette, the game was up when Manpreet returned home unexpectedly and caught her searching the kitchen for the biscuit jar. With Claudette clearly suffering no problems in her search for hobnobs, it was obvious that she wasn't suffering any pain at all.

When a furious Manpreet called Charles back home to deal with the situation, Claudette continued to shamelessly lie. Manpreet was livid as Claudette accused her of making up stories.

Claudette soon realised that Manpreet wasn't to be messed with – she has faced down serial killer Meena, after all – and reluctantly changed tactics by coming clean.

In an emotional outburst, Claudette broke down as she wondered whether Charles and Manpreet were about to kick her out.

Claudette explained: "I've got nowhere to go. I'm homeless."

As Manpreet scoffed at the claim, Claudette added: "No, Manpreet. I lied about my back so I could stay longer because I lost my house. I thought it was the only way Charles would let me stay with him. No more questions, please!"

Although Charles was still baffled over how things could have got so bad for Claudette, who'd lived in her home for 40 years, he promised that she wasn't going anywhere.

In a recent chat, Flo Wilson – who plays Claudette – promised that the show would explore a softer side to her character.

Flo said: "The writing is absolutely brilliant. I just love the things Claudette says and the way she says them. The interpretation could be slightly cruel, but she's not that. I think, having been alone for a while, she's forgotten how to be around people. I think she'll learn to rein it in a bit!"

Emmerdale airs at the earlier time of 7pm this week on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
