Emmerdale fans moved by heartbreaking Cain flashback
Emmerdale aired a special episode tonight showing a flashback to Cain's childhood in the 1980s – leaving fans shocked and moved.
The episode gave us an insight into Cain's past, growing up with his alcoholic 'dad' Shadrach, mum Faith and sister Chas.
The episode opened with Faith driving Cain to their old family home, after which we were shown some heartbreaking scenes.
It was made clear that a violent Shadrach was beating Faith on a regular basis, which led to her Faith abandoning the family in desperation.
After that, Shadrach began to take his temper out on young Cain.
The soap cast younger versions of all four characters, with James Prentice playing Cain, Charleigh Brierley as Chas, Fleur Keith playing Faith, and Matt Sutton portraying Shadrach.
Fans absolutely loved the episode and were full of praise, with many feeling they know the characters better:
Liking these flashbacks and good to see them coming to a British soap, I’ve heard about Cain and Chas’ difficult childhood a lot but seeing it really contextualises where they are as characters. #Emmerdale

Probably the biggest character development I've seen for Cain since he first appeared. Hurrah for the background episode. #Emmerdale
