In yet another Emmerdale shocker, there are reports that Adam Thomas is quitting the role of Adam Barton.

The 28-year-old actor will be bowing out from ITV's long-running soap in a dramatic storyline due to unfold later in 2017 in hopes of hosting his own show, according to The Sun.

Digital Spy has reached out to both Emmerdale and Adam Thomas's representatives for clarification about the actor's status.

Although nothing is confirmed at this stage, Emmerdale super-fans are understandably distraught at the idea of losing the Barton brother (warning: NFSW tweets below):

Adam Thomas has been a mainstay of Emmerdale throughout eight years of Barton family drama, and continues to be a major part of the soap's ongoing stories.

The biggest shocker of Adam's life played out when he discovered that the man he thought was uncle - James Barton (Bill Ward) - turned out to be his biological father rather than John (James Thornton) (as he'd always been led to believe).

He's also had a rocky relationship with long-time best friend Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). However, he stood by the troubled mechanic during Aaron's heartbreaking prison stint earlier this year.

Adam Thomas took a break from Emmerdale last autumn to compete in I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here, quickly becoming a fan favourite for his cheeky pranks and his impressive string of Bushtucker trial wins.

The Manchester-born actor ultimately reached the grand finale of I'm a Celebrity, but finished third overall to winner Scarlett Moffatt and runner-up Joel Dommett in the last public vote.

He was back at work on Emmerdale only weeks later in early December. Adam denied at that time that he was considering quitting the soap in hopes of conquering Hollywood.

"I wish I was!" Adam joked on This Morning. "No, I'm not! I'm sorry, sorry! Sorry! Sorry, no! I love Emmerdale, I really love Emmerdale.

"No, I'm happy at Emmerdale and I just can't wait to get back to work. I've got one day tomorrow… and I can't wait to see everyone."

Emmerdale is currently on the verge of another major exit, as John Middleton quits after 21 years as Ashley Thomas. Ashley's heartbreaking final scenes will air next week.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
