Emmerdale will kill off at least one main character next week as Emma Barton's dark storyline finally comes to a head.

Emma (Gillian Kearney) has managed to avoid justice for a year after causing the death of her husband James in last autumn's epic motorway pile-up.

12 months on from Emma pushing James off that road bridge, the past comes back to haunt her this fortnight – and you may be surprised to learn that Gabby Thomas is the unlikely villager who sparks all the trouble.

As Gabby starts to scheme against Emma in a desperate quest for justice, she gets a result as the secret memory card which proves Emma's guilt finally resurfaces.

This leaves Emma terrified that time is running out for her, so her behaviour becomes stranger than ever and she heads over to the Bartons' farm for a final showdown with her former love rival Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb).

Emma wants to confront Moira about the feelings she had for James, but her enemy's vague answers push her even further over the edge.

The feuding pair find themselves in a furious fight with a pitchfork in one of the farm's barns, but their brawl knocks out a light and starts a fire.

As Moira ends up worse off in the flames and begs for help, the big question is whether Emma will come to her rescue before the barn explodes or leave her to die.

If you thought that all sounded worrying enough, it's still only the half of it! Moira's son Adam and his estranged wife Victoria also get drawn into the drama when they arrive on the scene after being alerted by the flames.

Adam is furious to spot Emma's bloody hands and he chases after her with a gun, but she stays one step ahead by seizing the weapon for herself.

Emma then fires a shot in the dark as she runs through the woods and someone is left badly injured as a result, but who will it be?

The Grim Reaper comes calling as the unmissable week plays out, so not everyone will survive. Who's reached the end of their time in the Dales?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
