Like a lot of our favourite soaps, Emmerdale has taken to experimenting with its storytelling techniques in the last few years, and its safe to say it had pulled it off spectacularly through Ashley Thomas's ongoing dementia storyline.

The show first visually represented his condition through erratic jump cuts to simulate the character's lapses in memory, and before Christmas really put us in his shoes by disorientating us with unexplained costume, location and even actor changes. It was very powerful television.

Now the soap has promised that we'll see more of these special episodes in the future through its social media channels.

Producer Iain MacLeod held an open Q&A online and responded to a fan on Twitter who asked if we'll see more episodes stray from the usual format.

Iain responded by saying, "there's an interesting episode in Ashley's story that you'll get to see before the summer."

He also used Instagram to elaborate on what we can expect from the upcoming stories, telling us they would "warm the cockles" as well as being heartbreaking.

"One of the things that we're trying to do between now and the summer is make this a really joyful story" he says.

Ashley's actor John Middleton will bow out of the soap this year, but it is unknown at the current time what his final scenes will be.

Emmerdale airs weeknight on ITV.
