Emmerdale's producer Iain MacLeod has revealed the first hints of Chas Dingle's exit storyline – confirming that her mum Faith will be closely involved.

Chas will be heading out of the village later this year as Lucy Pargeter, who plays her, is expecting twins and will be taking maternity leave.

Viewers recently saw Chas give her mother Faith a very frosty reception when she returned to the village after 13 years away – and it's this storyline that will ultimately lead to the pub landlady's temporary departure.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at an Emmerdale press event, Iain explained: "Chas's exit story is tied in with Faith. Obviously Chas is back in the not-too-distant future and there's a risk, as the viewers know the off screen situation.

"So if you create a big, 'gasp, I wonder if she has left for good?', people would think, 'well, she hasn't though, has she? She's just gone on maternity leave'.

"We didn't want to lead the audience up the garden path, but it's big and emotional – with some of the funniest and most heartbreaking scenes between Faith and Chas in the run up to it, which sum up their whole relationship.

"But nobody dies or anything!"

Lucy announced last October that she's expecting twins with her partner Rudi Coleano. The pair already have an 11-year-old daughter named Lola Grace.

More recently, Lucy revealed the sex of her babies – two girls – after having her five-month scan just before Christmas.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
